Sudan/South Sudan Catholic Bishops Conference was established in 1974 under the name “Sudan Catholic Bishops Conference” when it was approval of the Holy See. Since then, the Conference became the Assembly of the Catholic hierarchy in Sudan whereby the Bishops express their collegial responsibility towards to the people of God. Through the troubled up to date, the Bishops have kept to their vocation as Shepherds to ensure the progress of the Church and coordination of their social and pastoral ministry.
Although the twenty-one years of war was tense and dividing the country, the Bishops had always time to plan together in different locations for the good of their Christians and the country. With the South Sudan gaining its independence in July 9, 2011, the Catholic Bishops agreed to preserve their unity and pastoral care in the two countries as one entity. This led to the modification in the naming of the conference as known today as Sudan/South Sudan Catholic Bishops Conference (S/SSCBC).
